On-street Charging

With the government’s policy to end the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles at the end of the decade, it is estimated that 280-480 thousand public chargepoints will be needed by 2030. According to Zapmap, as of May 2023, there are 43,626 chargepoints spread across the UK, meaning over 5 times this figure is required to reach the 2030 target. Although the number of available chargepoints has increased by 38% since the previous year, the growth of EVCPs not only needs to continue but also spread more evenly across all areas. One such area that needs attention before EVs can become truly viable is on-street charging.

According to PwC, the proportion of drivers without off-street parking is just over half in London, and over a third in Manchester, Edinburgh and Cardiff. For a viable switch to EVs by 2030, these drivers must have a viable option for charging at home. On-street chargepoints are installed upon existing lampposts, bollards or dedicated charging posts, with ground-embedded chargepoints on the rise too.

Unfortunately, the roll-out of on-street charging has been slow and patchy, with circa 5,700 UK on-street chargepoints, only 1,000 of these are outside of London. Particular areas such as Yorkshire and Humber are lagging significantly behind in their numbers as local authorities are currently lacking the choice and incentivisation to roll them out.

We recognise that considerable and even growth in on-street charging is the next significant step in the world of EVs. Car Charged UK has been testing the application of this technology for two years.
